About Me
Locking Up Your Home

For quite some time, I was struggling with home security. I was really nervous about robberies, especially since there were quite a few burglaries in the area. I wanted to make some changes that day that would help, so I turned to a lock, keys, and safes company. I chatted with them about how to make my home even more safe, and they had great tips for making things better. Within a few weeks, our entire place was rock solid from a security standpoint, and I was so pleased to sleep well at night without any problems. 5 Common Problems A Locksmith Can Fix

Your home's locks are an essential part of your home's security. However, problems can come up with your locks that require the help of a locksmith. Here are some common problems that a locksmith can fix for you.

Jammed Locks

A common problem you may run into is a jammed lock. This happens if the locking mechanism becomes misaligned and you have a problem turning the key in the cylinder to unlock your door. A locksmith can help disassemble the lock so that all dirt and debris can be removed from the lock cylinder. Silicone lubricant can also be used to help the cylinder easily turn.

Broken Keys

Did you have a key break off in a lock and you do not know what to do? This can happen if a key becomes weak from repeated use, or if you tried to force a key into a jammed lock and the key broke off. A locksmith can extract that broken key by using lubricant and pliers to help turn the lock cylinder and extract it. In some situations, the lock cylinder may need to be replaced to get the broken key out of there.

Misaligned Locks

Is your deadbolt not sliding into the door jamb as it used to? This can happen over time due to the door going through temperature changes that cause the materials to expand and contract, or your house settling over time. Misaligned locks can be fixed by adjusting the location of the strike plate so that the lock can slide in without an issue. It's also possible that the door needs to be adjusted so that it hangs properly.

Worn Tumblers

Every lock has tumblers within the lock cylinder, which are metal pins that need to be properly aligned to unlock a door. Unfortunately, those tumblers can become worn down from repeated use, which will cause your lock to have trouble with basic locking and unlocking. You may need to have the tumblers replaced with new ones to get the lock working properly again.

Frozen Locks

Have a lock that is directly exposed to the outside air? It's possible for water to get into the lock during cold weather, which can eventually freeze and cause damage. A locksmith can help get the lock unfrozen without causing damage to it. Sometimes it is as simple as applying heat to the lock to melt the water inside, but it may be more complicated than that if the frozen water causes damage to the cylinder.
